Your home is most likely your biggest investment, and protecting it with the right insurance means you won’t have to face financial distress from unexpected disasters.

In fact, most mortgage lenders in Canada will demand that you provide proof of insurance when you are negotiating the mortgage transaction before they can grant you the key to your new home.

And now that there are so many options out there, choosing the right policy can feel overwhelming, but it’s crucial for peace of mind and financial security. This is where Square One Home Insurance comes in.

Square One Home Insurance is a Canadian company that’s been in operation since 2011.

They provide a different approach where customers can design their own coverage level according to their specific needs, an approach that enables Canadians to obtain quotes and buy insurance and file their claims from the comfort of their homes.

In this Square One review, we will provide all the necessary information about Square One Insurance Canada, from customer feedback and policy pricing to a comparison with other providers to help you make a well-informed home insurance decision.

Square One company background

Square One Insurance Services was founded by Daniel Mirkovic, Chris Bayly, and Jason Vander Zalm, and it started its operations in Vancouver, BC, in January 2011.

Their goal was to establish an insurance solution which could accommodate Canadians through enhanced simplicity and adaptability.

Their digital approach gained popularity, which led Square One Insurance to expand its services to British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec and reach more than 50,000 customers throughout North America.

Square One Insurance Services allows customers to perform every insurance task online or by telephone. Their home insurance policies are underwritten by The Mutual Fire Insurance Company of BC, a trusted provider since 1902, under BC regulatory oversight.

Square One’s mission is guided by three simple principles: treat people the right way, take ownership and solve problems, and be creative with solutions.

Square One coverage details

Square One offers flexible policies that protect your home, belongings, and liability, with options tailored to homeowners, condo owners, and renters across Canada.

The standard coverage includes protection for your dwelling or condo unit, personal property like furniture and electronics, and additional living expenses if your home becomes unlivable due to an insured event.

Liability coverage is also included, which protects you if someone is injured on your property or if you accidentally cause damage to someone else’s belongings.

Square One Insurance Canada goes beyond the basics by offering optional coverage for high-value items such as bicycles, fine art, and jewelry.

You can also add identity theft protection and legal expense coverage for extra peace of mind. Another unique feature is that water backup and inland flood coverage are automatically included, which is important for many Canadian homeowners facing changing weather patterns.

It’s important to note that some specialty items require proof of value, so be prepared to provide receipts or appraisals for those.

Square One pricing and value

Square One Insurance Canada uses a flexible pricing model where your premium depends on factors like your location, the type of home you have, coverage limits, and your deductible choice. Because you can customize your policy, you only pay for what you actually need.

For example, tenants can get coverage starting as low as $12 per month, while condo owners pay around $40 per month, and homeowners’ premiums vary more depending on the size and location of the property.

So horrible. We had a claim for our car and it took a month to get sorted out. We were never once able to reach our adjuster so we had to call the customer service line instead and talk to random different adjusters each time. We had to call nearly everyday for the entire month and wait on the line for 40+ mins to get through. They take at least a week to complete a simple task. For example, we asked them to tow our car to a collision centre for repairs. We called e ach day reminding them until they finally contacted a towing company to do it, an entire week later. They never respond to emails or provide any updates unless you call in. ... Show More

Awful! 4 people tell you 4 different things. No one explains anything to you. They flat out lie! Telling me now I have to pay $2500 deductible for my someone hitting me and is 100% at fault. They have NO IDEA what they are doing besides screwing people!! Biggest regret of my life. I tried to contact managers and head of operations with no response or help!

Made a claim with them after someone hit my vehicle. Turns out that they have nothing to do with claims and they farm it out to Zurich. Because Square One customers are not Zurich customers, we are placed at the bottom of the priority list. I've contacted Zurich three times so far with zero response from the adjuster. Submitted an estimate for repairs, no response. Time to shop around for new insurance.

We canceled out policy in April. They decided to auto renew it on their own and then take 4 months of premiums. When found out they said “no refunds”. I feel this is pretty common for them a scam they have going. They tell you to cancel by calling, you do it then they ignore what you said and still charge your card. Horrible

My partner and I had a home insurance policy with square one, he was named as the primary and me as secondary. My partner died and I received a renewal email. I called them to cancel the renewal (plenty of notice 2 weeks). They told me only my partner can cancel (he is deceased so impossible!!). They told me that the payment would go to the credit card on file, I asked if it was his or mine, they would not tell me. His credit cards no longer work as he is deceas ed, they told me they will take the payment and if the payment does not go through then a non-payment of insurance will go against both our names. Then I asked for my name to be removed from the policy, they said only my deceased partner can do this!! They are horrific and underhanded. Multiple avenues of complaint have been filed against this company. ... Show More
